Not only do you have a pretty challenging start because you have a lot of small hostile factions near you, but also a couple of major factions that don't harbor much love for you (Egypt and Seleukid empire). Your starting province is pretty profitable with a unique harbor building, and the campaign is pretty challenging because most of the surrounding tribes hate your guts.Īnother fun one is Pontus. You get some fun units to play around with, and very varied enemies to play against (Gauls to the North and east, Spaniards to the south, Germans a little further east, Romans to the South East). My other suggestion is always Carthage or the Suebii (Germania?), also the Britain’s can be fun if you’re up to a challenge.Įdit: the India faction (ONLY IN DEI) is a blast, elephants and great bow units. Infantry and missles in front, flank both sides with lighter cav and send the shock cav around the back. I personally used 4 shock cav 6 medium/light cav, some infantry and a few missles with an onager to bait them in. Luckily you have plenty of lighter cav and skirmish/support units if you prefer a more mobile attack style. Hammer and Anvil if you’re a fan of Alexander but you said you don’t love Greek units. You can adopt a lot of different play styles. They won’t go toe to toe with legionaries but they don’t need to. Good mix of eastern shock Cav with solid infantry to back it up.

On the flip side, I like the idea of Para Bellum with it's increased building costs and greater reliance on food but it has a lot of UI issues, not as many enhancements as DEI and there doesn't seem to be anything limiting the spread of any given faction across the map such as economics, diplomacy, modified AI aggression or restoring native factions (based on faction size, they just tend to either conquer or confederate) which ultimately forces me to constantly be on the offensive attempting to prevent a currently friendly faction from growing into a potential threat later on which prevents me from being able to disband legions/fleets during a period of peace in order to concentrate on building my economy.Įdit: Another thing I like about DEI is that most provinces have 1 extra settlement (often with a unique faction) which adds to the diplomacy and challenge of the game by making progress slower for player and AI.Click here to set your flair! Welcome to /r/TotalWar!Ī subreddit for all of those who love the Total War series. DEI is incredibly detailed which makes it more immersive and certain features make it more of a challenge (I love the supply line reforms and population systems) although I find the AI has too many buffs, I bought R2TW years ago specifically for DEI so I've never played vanilla but I recently in the last week downloaded Para Bellum. Originally posted by Warriordude:I used to have DEI installed, was one of my favorite mods, they turn times for me were way to slow, uninstalled and went to Para Bellum, turn times are a lot faster.
